چکیده

A physically plausible lower bound on the spatially varying geostrophic mesoscale eddy energy dissipation time-scale within ocean, related to geographical transfer rate out of mesoscales, is provided by means a simple and computational inexpensive inverse calculation. Data diagnosed from high resolution global configuration ocean simulation supplied parameterized model energy, which results as solution an optimization We find that shortest in Southern Ocean, Western Boundary Currents, western boundaries, consistent with expectation these regions are notable sites baroclinic activity processes leading mesoscales. Although our should be interpreted given assumptions going into calculation, it serves important base line reference for further investigations energetics, well intended inference calculation more complete but also much complex.

Diffusivity, Kinetic Energy Dissipation, and Closure Theories for the Poleward Eddy Heat Flux

Diffusive eddy closure theory for estimating the poleward heat flux is reexamined and tested in the context of a two-layer homogeneous model. Consideration of the inverse energy cascade induced by baroclinic turbulence on the b plane leads to an expression for diffusivity in terms of the kinetic energy dissipation and the b effect. A key step in the closure is the identification of this diffusi...

A boundary-value problem for the parameterized mesoscale eddy transport

We present a physically motivated boundary-value problem for each vertical ocean column, whose solution yields a parameterized mesoscale eddy-induced transport streamfunction. The new streamfunction is a nonlocal function of the properties of the fluid column. It is constructed to have a low baroclinic mode vertical structure and to smoothly transition through regions of weak stratification suc...

Modification of inertial oscillations by the mesoscale eddy field

[1] The modification of near‐surface near‐inertial oscillations (NIOs) by the geostrophic vorticity is studied globally from an observational standpoint. Surface drifter are used to estimate NIO characteristics. Despite its spatial resolution limits, altimetry is used to estimate the geostrophic vorticity. Three characteristics of NIOs are considered: the relative frequency shift with respect t...

Evaluating Mesoscale Model Predictions and Parameterizations Against SGP ARM Data on a Seasonal Timescale

A major objective of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is to test and improve parameterizations for cloud and radiative processes. A common strategy adopted for this purpose within the ARM science team is to utilize single-column models (SCMs) driven by appropriate boundary conditions derived from observations, so as to isolate the parameterizations themselves. In practice, ac...
